Blue Screen Errors - How To Fix Blue Screen Errors

If you have even a little experience using computers, then you probably already know it is never a good sign when your laptop or desktop stops functioning, freezes and nothing but a blue screen appears on your monitor. As a matter of fact, it is typically a very bad sign and a very good indication a serious error has occurred. Of course, the question becomes exactly what is the blue screen error and what is the source of the problem, as you will need some indication of these in order to find a solution. Sometimes, simply restarting your computer will make it seem as though the error went away or fixed itself somehow because your computer may boot up in its normal way. However, don’t let that fool you, it is important to still search for the answers to exactly what happened. There is no doubt it is always a relief when your PC will boot up and function after a serious error but if you do not pursue the issue, then it might become a much more serious problem and potentially a problem that cannot be repaired.

Blue Screen Errors Often Involve Software & Hardware

One of the reasons it can be a bit difficult to fix blue screen errors is because many times they are a result of hardware and software failure, meaning there is a combination of problems on the machine. Additionally, a blue screen error will often involve several applications. It is very common for the problem to originate in an application other than the operating system such as Microsoft Office or any other program you might use for specific tasks. However, once the application or software you are working with has a serious error, then it sets off a series of internal system processes and in turn ends up crashing the operating system as well. So not only do you have hardware and software involved, but you also have multiple pieces of software that may need to be repaired or have their settings reviewed. Obviously, this creates a relatively large project requiring a review, troubleshooting and investigating each piece of software and hardware involved in the blue screen error.

Simple Tips to Avoid Blue Screen Errors

It is always preferable to simply avoid issues like blue screen errors so you don’t have to put in the time and effort of trying to fix the problem. There is no 100% guarantee that your computer will never experience a blue screen error if you take preventative measures, but the chances of one occurring if you do certain things are extremely low.

The best way to avoid these types of problems is to stay on top of your computer maintenance tasks. Additionally, it is important to review all the maintenance tasks you perform on a regular basis and see if you are missing anything important. For example, if you defragment your hard disk once a month, that is great. However, if your registry is full of errors and you ignore the registry completely in your maintenance routine, then that is a problem.

Important Maintenance Items:

  • Hard Drive
  • Operating System Updates
  • Software Updates
  • Update Drivers
  • Registry
  • Storage Capacity Remaining
  • Disk Clean & Defrag
  • Virus, Spyware and Malware Scanning and Cleaning
  • Review Firewall Rules & Permissions
  • Hardware Testing and Compatibility Scans

The tasks and items above are just a few of the things that should be included in your regular computer maintenance routine. Ensuring you are properly maintaining your PC will go a long way in avoiding blue screen errors.

Fixing Blue Screen Errors

Unfortunately, Windows systems are often not very helpful in helping you fix serious errors and sometimes make it difficult to find good information such as an error code or description of the error. However, there are two places you begin to look for at least some information that may help you get started towards a solution.

Windows Action Center

Computers that have Windows 7 or higher as their operating system have an Action Center included in the software. In the Action Center users can run various maintenance tasks, perform backups and adjust many different system settings. Additionally, the Action Center may give you some information on the blue screen error and perhaps even a specific error to investigate. It is capable of running an automatic diagnosis and fix as well, but most of the time it will not be able to solve the issue. However, if it gives you a specific error or error code, then you can at least start Googling for answers.

Windows Event Viewer

Windows also offers what is called the Event Viewer, which is basically a program for viewing system logs. This can be a very helpful system if you know exactly where to look and have experience with this particular piece of software. The Event Viewer contains logs for almost every component on your system, therefore, it can be complicated to work with and sort through all the information available to find the data that is relevant to your issue.

By looking in the Action Center and using the Windows Event Viewer, you can at least get started with gathering some basic information about your blue screen error. While neither of these programs will solve the problem for you, they might give you a starting point that will ultimately lead you to a solution.

As you can probably tell, blue screen errors can be very complicated to diagnose and fix. If you do not have experience with fixing computers on a regular basis then you might want to employ a professional but affordable remote computer support service to help you.
